CCAC Assessment Report for 2010
A CCAC Assessment Report for 2010 shows troubling deficiencies in the standards of care for the animals at UBC. For all its assurances of the fail safe mechanisms in place to ensure the animals’ well being, more than 211,000 animals were used by UBC researchers in that year, nearly one-third of these experienced pain and distress up to severe levels, and at least 31 animals endured pain “near, at or above the pain tolerance threshold of unanesthetized, conscious animals”. This is by UBC’s own admission. And now we have the CCAC’s documentation of poor housing, safety and even lack of accurate documentation on numbers and sourcing of the animals.
