Marineland is in the process of finally closing its doors and has told officials that it plans to remove its remaining marine animals “expeditiously.” Reports suggest the notorious marine park may be planning to sell beluga whales to Chimelong Ocean Kingdom—a large theme park in China.
In 2019, Canada passed a groundbreaking law to phase out whale and dolphin captivity. The law prohibits captive breeding of whales and using them in entertainment shows. However, it is unclear how the Canadian government could ensure that any whales exported to China would not be used in shows or for captive breeding.
Please join us in calling on the federal government to ensure health assessments of all remaining whales and dolphins, and to ensure any animals exported are sent to facilities that provide a higher quality of life, with as many as possible going to sanctuaries like the one being developed in Nova Scotia by the Whale Sanctuary Project.
Thank you!
