In May 2024, the Canadian Centre for Alternatives to Animal Methods (CCAAM)—the country’s sole institution dedicated to advancing non-animal research methodologies—was forced to close due to a lack of federal funding. This closure represents a significant setback for Canada’s scientific, ethical, and innovation goals.

CCAAM had established itself as a globally respected leader, supported by strong public-private partnerships and a clear strategic vision under the leadership of Dr. Charu Chandrasekera. Comparable centres internationally receive between $7 million and $19 million annually in federal support, enabling them to drive meaningful progress in reducing reliance on animal experimentation.

Canada, meanwhile, continues to lag behind, with disproportionately high levels of animal use in research. Despite a national commitment to phase out toxicity testing on animals by 2035, insufficient investment has undermined the ability to achieve this objective.

CCAAM now has an opportunity to reopen in Ottawa; however, sustainable federal funding is essential. Reinstating support would not only align with Canada’s stated commitments but also position the country as a leader in a rapidly expanding global sector projected to reach $30 billion by 2030.
I respectfully urge the Government of Canada to provide the necessary funding to enable CCAAM to reopen and continue its critical work.
