In May 2024, the Canadian Centre for Alternatives to Animal Methods (CCAAM), the nation’s only dedicated centre for the development and validation of non-animal research methods, was forced to close due to a lack of federal funding. This closure represents a significant loss for Canada’s scientific leadership, ethical commitments, and future innovation.

CCAAM was internationally recognized for its leadership, strategic partnerships, and forward-looking approach under Dr. Charu Chandrasekera. While comparable centres globally receive between $7 million and $19 million annually in federal support, Canada has not provided the necessary investment to sustain its only institution of this kind.

Beyond the ethical considerations, the economic case for supporting alternatives to animal testing is equally compelling. The cost of acquiring a single non-human primate for research can exceed $30,000 before any experimental work begins. In contrast, advanced human-relevant technologies, such as brain-on-a-chip systems, typically cost between $1,100 and $1,500 per experiment. These methods are not only more humane but also more cost-effective and often more predictive of human outcomes.

Despite Canada’s stated commitment to phase out animal-based toxicity testing by 2035, the absence of meaningful funding has hindered progress toward this goal. Canada continues to lag behind peer nations in both investment and outcomes, while maintaining significantly higher rates of animal use in research.

CCAAM now has a viable opportunity to reestablish its operations in Ottawa. With stable federal funding, the Centre could resume its critical work and position Canada as a global leader in a rapidly expanding sector projected to reach $30 billion by 2030.

I respectfully urge the Government of Canada to provide sustained funding to support the reopening of CCAAM. Doing so would demonstrate a clear commitment to ethical, innovative, and economically sound scientific advancement.
