The recent closure of the Canadian Centre for Alternatives to Animal Methods (CCAAM) marks a significant setback for ethical and innovative science in Canada. As the nation’s only centre dedicated to replacing animal experimentation, its loss has halted critical progress at a time when global momentum is accelerating.

Although Canada has pledged to phase out animal-based toxicity testing by 2035, this commitment has not been supported with the necessary investment. In contrast, comparable centres worldwide receive substantial federal funding, allowing them to lead advancements in humane, human-focused research.

CCAAM stood out for its strong collaborations, ambitious direction, and international reputation. Yet, due solely to a lack of federal funding, it was forced to close—leaving its facilities in storage and its work unfinished.

There is still an opportunity to change course. With a potential new location in Ottawa, CCAAM could reopen and help position Canada at the forefront of a transformative scientific field expected to reach $30 billion globally by 2030.
Allocating funding for CCAAM would demonstrate a meaningful commitment to innovation, ethics, and global leadership. I respectfully call on the government to act decisively and support the reopening of this essential institution.

The University of British Columbia (UBC) just released statistics on its use of animals in research and teaching in 2015, revealing that 185,692 animals were used in 517 research and teaching protocols at UBC. This corresponds to a total increase in animal use of 2% from last year.

In memory of Aurora and her daughter Qila

Supporters of ADAV and STOP UBC Animal Research send our love and respects to Aurora and her daughter Qila who have passed away at the Vancouver Aquarium.

Qila died about 2 weeks ago, and it has just been announced that Aurora has also passed. The Aquarium says Aurora was surrounded by people who loved her… Yet she should have been surrounded by other whales – in the wild where she belonged.

Jenni was talented, compassionate, wise, a beautiful soul… We will always remember the sensitive photographic work that only she could have created for our campaigns.
