It was announced today that the University of British Columbia’s president Santa Ono is leaving this fall to take on a new job leading the University of Michigan. We wish him well in his new position. It is our hope that the person who replaces him at UBC supports the university to move away from animal research and toward more innovative, progressive and human relevant approaches such as those used at University of Windsor’s Canadian Centre for Alternatives to Animal Methods. Architectural space was used by Harry Harlow, a psychologist in 1970s for a very controversial animal research. He suffered from depression and was intent on creating depression in monkeys. He designed a space that he called "the pit of despair" . 3 month old monkeys were placed in this space ranging from 3 month to 1 year. They would try to climb out at first but after they give up and go to a hunched posture. His research assistants say that the happiest monkeys would not survive this and would be crushed. After coming out they were very disturbed and could not socialize or mate so they would be going into rape racks for more study. Researchers at the same time confronted him saying we already know that a social animal will be disturbed if not socialized properly and that they could not see the point of this torture. The same type of experiment is done today on other animals to study PTSD and other psychological problems….
