Dear Mr/Ms
The recent undercover investigation by Last Chance for Animals at ITR Laboratories in Montreal has revealed to Canadians the nearly complete absence of protection for animals used in Canadian research and testing.
As you may know, Canada is the only G7 country without federal government inspectors with the power to enforce rules governing animal treatment in testing and research labs. Instead, Canada has the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) – a body which can only investigate complaints with the co-operation of the research labs, and has never removed certification from any facility, no matter how egregious its violations. The CCAC is also only responsible for publicly-funded organizations, leaving animals held at privately-held labs, suppliers and teaching facilities completely unprotected.
We are calling upon you to protect these animals. We urge you to bring Canada in line with other industrialized nations and require licensing and regulation of all Canadian scientific laboratories, suppliers and teaching centres where animals are held and used. Until the harmful use of animals in research and testing is eliminated, it is our responsibility to protect these animals from egregious cruelty.
