World Week for Animals in Laboratories – Wednesday’s Action
Dear Animal Defense and Anti-Vivisection Society of BC Subscriber, This week is World Week for Animals in Laboratories. Each day, we will be sending out an action or activity that you can do to make a difference. Today’s suggestion is to write a letter to your Member of Parliament asking for greater oversight of research laboratories wherein animals are used for experimentation. You can find your MP at this site: https://openparliament.ca/politicians/ The petition referenced in the letter below can be seen at: https://petitions.ourcommons.ca/en/Petition/Details?Petition=e-2285 Here is a sample letter: Dear Prime Minister Trudeau, Honourable Members and MPs I am writing in support of e-petition 2285, which calls for greater oversight of Canadian research laboratories wherein animals are used for experimentation, and for government regulation of these laboratories under an empowered Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC). Canada remains the only G7 nation without proper regulation of animal use in biomedical research and product testing. We call on the Canadian Government to increase the mandate of the CCAC to include privately funded labs along with those which receive public funding. We call for a strengthening of the CCAC’s powers to penalize violations of its standards and to place the CCAC itself under the direction of the Minister of Justice so that its standards of animal housing, transportation and use can be safeguarded from neglect. Until such time as Canada takes its place as a world leader in truly innovative, non-animal research and testing, the sourcing, transportation, housing and use of animals must be stringently monitored to avoid the numerous horrific injustices that worsen the situation for animals in laboratories under the current system. Sincerely, |
