Animal Abuse at BC Slaughterhouse

The information below regarding animal abuse at Meadow Valley Meats slaughterhouse, located just outside Vancouver, came in an email from Animal Justice. The image is from their website page on this issue. There is an option to read more information and watch video footage or just to add support without the additional information if you don’t have the stomach for it. Thanks to Animal Justice for their work on this.

[On Feb. 22, 2023], CTV National News aired shocking footage provided by Animal Justice, showing the first-ever behind-the-scenes look at a small-scale, local Canadian slaughterhouse.

The video shows gentle cows, calves, sheep, goats, and llamas enduring illegal abuse and heartbreaking suffering, including:

-Terrified animals trying desperately to escape
-Workers beating animals in the face with canes, paddles, and electric prods
-Animals improperly stunned, and showing signs of consciousness even after being sliced open
-Sheep slaughtered despite being unable to walk, which would be illegal in the United States as a food safety risk

The footage comes from Meadow Valley Meats slaughterhouse, just outside Vancouver. Animal Justice was provided with the footage, and we worked with CTV to air it to the nation [on Feb 22] as the first-ever chance for Canadians to see the truth about how animals like cows, sheep, and goats are killed for meat at a small-scale slaughterhouse. Slaughterhouses are always a nightmare for animals—even at places that sell so-called “humane” meat from “happy” animals.

It’s also shocking that even though government meat inspectors are required to be on-site at slaughterhouses, they didn’t stop the abuse at Meadow Valley Meats. [Animal Justice] has filed a legal complaint with authorities, and are demanding that they investigate and take action.

Slaughterhouses operate in near-total secrecy, concealing the truth about the brutal end from the public. Canadians deserve transparency, and should be able to see inside slaughterhouses and know what they’re supporting with their food choices. Animal Justice is calling on British Columbia and Canada to join countries like the UK, Spain, and the Netherlands to require cameras be installed in slaughterhouses across the country. Footage from these nightmare facilities should be broadcast directly to the internet so people can see the truth about how animals die with their own eyes.
